Thanks to the Portuguese explorers the land of natural treasures which was named January River (Rio de Janeiro) by mistake.When Portuguese Captain Pedro Álvares Cabral ships entered Guanabara Bay in 1st January 1502 , the colonizers thought they were sailing up a river.They would never have guessed that this swamp area they neglected at first would become the trendiest city in South America. The reputations of Exciting city proven due  Carnival time,   in fact remains all year along.

There is a second version for the name of the city, a few  historians  said that the Portuguese Captain Pedro Alvares Cabral was a very qualyfing navigator and would never take a bay as river by mistake, the name of the city comes literally from the old portuguesse word "Rias" that means estuary so as they arrived in january they called it Rias de janeiro (january estuary) and soon  after it became  Rio de janeiro.
